Paris Spring 09: Hussein Chalayan

Hussein Chalayan is one of my favorite designers. I am certain that his brain works at a different level than most people in the planet because he always comes up with really awe-inspiring things. He has a message but is never preachy and his concepts never overshadow his clothes. Lately his clothes have become more wearable than ever, yet he still keeps this awesome inventor spirit that I simply adore. He is incredibly underrated in the industry and I have no idea why because he always manages to merge beauty and technology, the organic with the man-made with amazing results. This collection was about "the speed in our lives and how it can only result in a crash". Only Hussein could turn that into beautiful clothes.

So he had me at the blue stripes, obviously. I love this. It's playful and a little futuristic but still very sexy. There was a lot of sexy in this collection which is a bit out of character for him, I think, but I don't mean that in a bad way at all.

More stripes! I love the way the skirt comes back up to the neck and seems to just hang in there suspended in nothing. The striped detail at the sleeves really elevates the graphic punch.

Sexy architectural graphic little white dress. I've always been a fan of things that suggest movement while not actually moving (which is one of the reasons why I love Sonic Youth, but I guess thats neither here or there). This dress is really spectacular in its simplicity, and is the perfect mate to the similar black number at Demeulemeester.

Ok, this is nuts. But, BUT I love it. I love the oval peephole at the thighs that lets the weirdo bodysuit with Mugler-ish hip wings come out and say hello. This is just cool, that's it, just purely C O O L.

Another short dress with crazy movement all over the place. I would really love to own one of these.

And speaking of things that appear to be in motion while standing still, check out the awesome molded latex finale dresses. Fucking rad.
