That REALLY grinds my gears

I truly, truly, truly loathe the phrase "real women have curves". It's bullshit ok? "Real" women are everywomen, and every woman is different. To see this phrase used on the cover of VOGUE, of all places, is downright ludicrous. Who are you kidding? Does this mean your magazine only features fake women? Real dolls? Holograms? Give me a break. Oh and whose idea was it to include it on the cover of The Shape Issue? HAHAHAA Are you really expecting me to "buy" that line when you put it alongside "Nip/Tuck Designing the Perfect Body" and you're talking about "leaner lines"? Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. You are Vogue, not O the Oprah Magazine and that phrase is hardly as inclusive and pro-women as everyone would like to believe. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go draw on my stomach with a sharpie and listen to Bikini Kill.

Complete BS of them. The phrase itself bothers me but for Vogue to use it is just laughable.

Oh gosh, the real women have curves ordeal really is irritating.

Never been a huge fan of Beyonce anyway. So I picked up the mail and was quite disappointed.

Loving your blog anyway.

Excellent points about the real women! Never thought about that before, but what you said makes perfect sense!!

Oh, and my favorite/worst text on the cover is Weight Obsession: One Woman Conquers Her Diet Demons. They make everything sound so scary and bad.

Totally agree! And agree again on the Bikini Kill/sharpie business...covers like that make me wanna do the same thing.

AMEN...
I've always *despised* the back lash against us girls with no curves. Yeah, I'm all for curves too, but don't ban me from womanhood!

RRRR that makes me so mad. Its Vogue!!! Its like a huge joke on them, those fucking hypocrits. And the "real women" thing is such a slap in the face. I hate it when people say that! Cover lines like these belong on Cosmo.

You summed up nicely what I wanted to say.

I agree! I mean, some models and skinny people are that way because they starve themselves but a lot of people are naturally NOT curvy. And I support curves, but not to the point where like, people are obese and take up half of your airplane seat you know? It's like, we shouldn't celebrate certain unhealthy life choices either overly fat or overly skinny but you can't expect everybody to look the same!! I love this post =)

Everyone always tries to paint Beyonce as some "real woman". It really angers me. Her hair is a weave, she is rarely seen without heaps of make up (you wouldn't recognize her without it). . . I just wish they'd stop!

I totally agree! And I love Bikini Kill :)

oh man, i cant believe you mentioned bikini kill. best best.

YEAH EVERYONES FIRED UP. I HATE BEYONCE. go put a ring ding on it and SHUDDDUP.

also, i would like to say that i despise being defined in terms of weight what makes us, women, as REAL. real woman have curves, you say? well THEY ALSO HAVE BRAINS, but hm, that doesn't really fit with the cover (or beyonce, ahem).

anyway, i'm a real woman and i have anger. so chew on it.

I love Bikini Kill/Kathleen Hanna. She is my hero. The end.

Actually, not the end. I hate that phrase just as much as you do. Because you know what? Lots of real women are thin as fuck and don't have "sexy curves" that appeal to men (ahem, that would be me).

I agree completely. It makes you feel like if you don't have curves then you are not a real woman. This line has always made me made seethe. American Vogue is so boring and becoming less relevant each issue.

Check out my line Tit Tees. It's all about body love no matter what shape or size.
