Resort 2011: Alexander McQueen

The resort collection at Alexander McQueen marks a new beginning for the label, the first collection by new designer Sarah Burton. As it's a resort collection I won't necessarily judge it on its push of creative boundaries because after all, resort collections are made to sell and not to impress. The sharp tailoring and powerful sexuality are still evident in her collection and although the clothes were very wearable there was still an underlying feeling of subversiveness that would separate the women that wear these from all others.

These "buff beige" pieces were one of my favorites, the strong but rounded shoulder is a welcome breath of fresh air after seasons of being bombarded with the Balmain shoulder. The jacquard and ruffles of the dress are borderline 80's party and YET there is some sense of quiet dignity about it.

This is the piece that Cate Blanchett will probably end up wearing to an awards show.

The finale dresses were beautiful, the dress with the kimono sleeves seems like it came straight out of some early 20th century vintage archive and the red tones of the last one are just incredible.

I have to say that I'm excited to see where she is taking the McQueen label.

From what I'm seeing, I think I'm pretty confident in Sarah to continue the label as it was (or mostly as it was).

agreed on the balmain shoulders thing. it won't be soon enough before we never have to see them again.
