Girl Power!

You guys know by now that I love the nineties (1997 is my favorite year if you want to get real specific about it). My favorite thing about the 90's is the music, especially all the awesome bands with chicks that played instruments. Marisa Meltzer's Girl Power : The Nineties Revolution in Music chronicles the whole thing, from riotgrrrl to teenpop sensations. She connects all these wildly different women and really tells the story about the evolution of girl power from an alternative underground battle cry to a mainstream accessory sold at Claire's (not ragging on Claire's of course, that's where I got all my barrettes, duh). Reading the book made me feel like I was 13 again and discovering all these awesome bands (mostly through 120 minutes on MTV and actually BUYING cd's just because I'd read good things about them, but I digress). I used to play guitar quite a bit when I was younger and I'd decided that a good resolution for 2010 was to start playing again. And so the first thing I did when I finished reading the book was pick up my guitar.

This is Stella, my guitar.
UNFORTUNATELY, Stella has been going through some TOUGH times and somehow only has one string left? I'm SO ashamed about this! A weekend trip to Guitar Center is in the works this weekend to pick up some new strings. My whole family (gramma, aunts & uncles & mom) got me this guitar for my 13th birthday. We all went to the guitar store together and then I think we went to eat at Applebees. It was rad and I slept with it the first night.

You may notice that Stella is glittery. I'm pleased to inform that I did that with glitter nail polish.

In college, I played bass in a band (I think we played two shows).
I named my bass Juergen (dear god!!!).
I am putting up a picture because I don't want him to get jealous.

My guitar was unplayable so I played bass for a bit and tried to learn the basslines to some Hole songs (the first thing I did when I got my guitar was learn how to play Live Through This from beginning to end). Luckily my dude's guitar was only missing ONE string (what kind of show are we running here?), so then I played a little bit with his (random sidenote, we actually have the same guitar, purchased when we were young and didn't know each other!).

Anyways, 2010 is the year of makin' it happen.
I'm going to make this happen again. You should make some awesomeness happen in your life and pick up Girl Power! You will love it, and it will probably inspire to revolution girl style now.

Sorry for the Photobooth pics, it was just easier that way.

Sunday Jam: Oh yes, I'm really doing this

Joan Osborne : One of Us

For some reason the boy and I just started singing this song. I think it's because we watched one of the Austin Powers movies last night and Dr. Evil sings it. This song is bizarre. ALSO Joan is so angsty with her nose ring!

Ps. My favorite line is "nobody calling on the phone, 'xcept for the Pope, maybe, in Rome".
I mean, WOAH.

Four Candles

Um, so I totally forgot my own blogger birthday! How awful is that? Geometricsleep turned 4 on the 26th! I'm only 3 days late so I guess it's not THAT bad.
Thanks to everyone that reads and comments and all that stuff. Let's make this year totally magical!
<3<3<3<3 all of yousss <3<3<3<3

I like a Hannah McGibbon collection?!?

Wah wah wah. You guys, it's true. Chloe's presentation for pre-fall is totally amazing and I feel a little gross that I like it so much. I'm obviously not one to hold grudges and although I love and miss Paolo Melim Andersson, these clothes are definitely rad and I'd be remiss if I didn't post them.

First of all, superblonde Siri is AMAZING ok? Girl is already a kind of magical fairy and that hair brings it to another level. This cropped jumpsuit is so perfect! I love the serious dark plaid and cropped pants and sleeves. The oversized jeweled detail on the neckline is the perfect hint of opulence and femininity for an otherwise borderline tomboy look.

YES.YES.YES. If I was attending the Oscars or the Met gala or something, I would wear this. It's so simple and luxurious and for reminds me a bit of Mary Poppins (I love love love Mary Poppins, so this is definitely a good thing).

YO WHAT? How perfect is this? I feel like this look wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for Phoebe Philo's epic spring Celine show. A deconstructed camel skirt suit made to look like a long jacket split up in half. Even the description is magically delicious. I would not be opposed if this was the first nice suit in my closet. It really doesn't get any better than this.

Impeccable wide plaid trousers with a matching button down shirt. My geometry teacher in high school dressed like this pretty much everyday and she was like, 5'2". I always loved it, it wasn't fashionable perse, but it was definitely a signature look that really suited her. Tomboy will still sure for fall of course, especially when it's this easy to pull it off.

Maybe Chloe can live again!

Spring 2010 Couture: Valentino

I absolutely adore what Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri are doing at Valentino. Their spring couture collection had echoes of the vision they presented for spring ready-to-wear, but with an added sense of humor, whimsy and edge.

A nude satin ribbon bandage dress is the ultimate in seduction, especially with a sheer long sleeve that further blurs the line between what is skin and what is fabric. The explosion of neon yellow is the perfect contrast, and the extra pieces that hang at the back give the impression that the dress can just be undone in a second.

Ps. I'm TOTALLY digging the sheer ribbon tied around the eyes. Superhero meets bondage meets hippie headband. A++

They have been working with really diaphanous, almost magical textures. The clothes are so light that they don't even look like she's wearing them, more like, beams of light an energy that surround the skin in some kind of futuristic-clothing-evolution development. I still really want a pair of sheer trousers.

PPP and MGC were also making the nature scene, with this flapper-esque top that is obviously the most ultra-luxurious owl costume ever (and I mean that in a good way!). Speaking of sheer trousers, I would love these jeweled-flower-embroidered pair even more.

Body makeup is FANTASTIC.

Siri is a magical disco fairy.

This is the perfect ruffled dress. Chloe Sevigny should probably wear it to the Oscars or something, to continue her ruffle-reign. The color variations are impeccable.

ivory coasts at matchless, part deux

Oh hey, so my band played at Matchless in Greenpoint last night. It was a swell time. You should come check us out next time we play.

Since this is a "fashawn blog" and all, I guess I should say how this outfit is the culmination of all my current favorite things in my closet (with the notable absence of my MJ shoes). The crazy-ugly floral print angora sweater with SHOULDER SITUATION that I've been wearing at least twice a week, with some T Alexander Wang dress that I bought in a L so it would be at the perfect awkward length. I can never wear it by itself because it has what I like to call a "racer front". The Acne boots are pretty much the same as the Atacomas except flat, which is ridiculous and hilarious at the same time.

PS. How DRAMATIC is that second picture, eh? You'd think I was singing about high school boyfriends or something.

HAIRRRR!

Who knew balloons could be so goth?

DIE. DIE. DEAD.

Gaga, McQueen, Chalayan, take notice

Flash pants!
(they show up at about 10 seconds in, no worries)

If they were real, the commercial would be shot by Showstudio, no doubt about it haha.

The New Length

The focal point in these Missoni looks is the amazing combination of textures, for sure, but the REAL story is in the skirts.

Skirts with a perfectly conservative below-the-knee length. And pairing said skirts with lil' Victorian-by-way-of-the-80s lace-up boots is also very delicious. The boots are kind of a hipster standard 'round these parts, but they are just really necessary in the completion of these looks. I've been really into wearing long dresses under sweaters lately with my crazy punk-rock elf Marc shoes, so I can definitely see myself looking at this collection for inspiration in the future.

Sunday Jam: Looking out for love

Fleetwood Mac : Big Love

CFCF : Big Love

The CFCF record has been getting a lot of play at the store recently, and it reminded me of the song Big Love which I absolutely LOVED when I was little and I had completely forgotten about. The truth is, I didn't even know who did the original, so imagine my surprise to see that it was Fleetwood Mac?!?! I think I like Fleetwood Mac more than I realize I like Fleetwood Mac. I remember their music as always making me feel weird inside when I was little, and that still carries over. They are a witchy band with supernatural powers for sure. In any case, I am giving you the original version (because you canNOT beat Lindsey Buckingham's high notes and FEELING in his voice) and the totally rad version by CFCF.

Enjoy!

But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

Right on.
Much love always, Coco.

"Size"

Finally got around to picking up the new issue of V.

First, I was impressed that they put Gabourey Sidibe on the cover. (Yes, they did split the covers with Dakota Fanning, but it's not like they sent subscribers Gabourey and left Dakota for the newsstand. They are both readily available.) Anyways, I think that's a little bit more groundbreaking than all the press they got for putting Crystal Renn in all the editorials. It would be much more powerful if they had just put Gabourey on the cover for a regular/non-themed issue, because that way they would be showing they don't need an excuse to welcome diversity.
BUT, the photograph inside is amazing.

I wanna be into these guys, I really do. But um... there is no fashion here? There is no point in putting fatter girls in the magazine if you're gonna dress them in Bongo jeans and make them look like the girls I see everywhere on my commute. Otherwise the point of "high fashion is only for skinny women" kinda stays therefore defeating the purpose of this whole issue in the first place.

Not that the usual models were wearing clothes at ALL times either, Iris Strubegger took it all off in Barcelona for a broodingly sexy editorial. Even though this is not Paris, the setting in the picture reminds me of THAT Le Smoking photograph by Helmut Newton.

We finally see some "big" girls wearing some real fashion, but then for some reason they gotta share the spotlight with the usual girls. Listen, I get the idea, and it's a really cute one for sure, but I do think that in the end, given what the other editorials look like, it becomes a bit of a cop out. I would rather see 10 awesome outfits on whatever girl, than 5 on 2 girls that are posed the same way. Maybe if they had posed together it would've been nicer? The bottomline is this isn't as cool as it could've been, even with the same idea.

Natasha Poly is supposed to be channeling Courtney Love in this story, and although I didn't really see the Courtney influence, the whole thing is absolutely KILLER. The amounts of Meow Miu involved makes my heart cry. Also Poly is awesome.

We end with a posi-vibe quasi-Calvin Klein 90's editorial that is really great.

V's my favorite magazine, so all this comes from a good place, but I just think if the industry is going to make such a big deal about diversity they should just BE diverse, instead of making up all these special times when diversity is ALLOWED and CELEBRATED!

The time is always and now.

The Exalted Woman

Oh the woes of being so luxuriously attired while living in an empty white room with low ceilings!

Alber Elbaz, master of womanly dressing delivered an all-powerful collection for pre-fall (and it's not even a REAL season!). It's so FRENCH! And also filled with essential items in a woman's wardrobe: a fur stole, leather gloves, red pumps, lace hose and headpieces.

1.18.2010

Funny girls lookin' FLY

Love the length on Tina's Zac Posen gown. Amy's dress kinda matches the carpet, but she looked awesome onstage with that dude from Chuck who is TOTALLY growing on me.

Stay cool my babies*!

Kinda Man Prada

Miuccia Prada was feeling a sorta unisex vibe for her Fall menswear show so she sent out some ladies decked out in pretty cozy knits. The boys wore shrunken, sometimes brightly colored knits over button downs that were left to look all crumply and imperfect, tucked into the perfect 90's flat front trousers. It's a great look on guys for sure, but the relaxed-dude look on girls is also A++.

The girls, meanwhile, didn't wear the same clothes as the boys, but they did share the same casual, relaxed vibe. There is a marked difference between these pieces and the ones that she shows in the womenswear shows, which I think truly showcases her amazing skills.

Sunday Jam: I wanna be yr Thurston Moore

Sleater-Kinney : I wanna be yr Joey Ramone

Always, always, always a classic.
When I heard them sing the "I wanna be your Thurston Moore" line, my love for them was officially cemented. I mean, what could be cooler than that?

Love you forever

Oh hey! Dave Grohl turns 41 today.
Happy Birthday babyyyyy.

Make sure to check out the solo at around 3.30.

Pre-Fall 2010: Proenza Schouler

I am DYING over Proenza Schouler's pre-fall collection, you guys. It is everything, everything, everything I want to wear. I've never seen "school-girl chic" done in such a tough, non-lolita way. Perhaps it's because as always, the Proenza girl is a bit of a tomboy, I should really be calling this "school-boy chic".

This is the first look and I have to be honest, the most striking thing here is the perfect tousled hair with overgrown bangs. It really adds a dose of swagger and attitude to the clothes. The pieces are all classics too, the perfect hooded navy toggle-coat, a blue button down shirt under a grey sweater tucked into plaid shorts. THATS A SCHOOL UNIFORM GUYS! But then... it's not? The boots seem to be inspired by their epic fall 09 boots that I am still CERTAIN I will get in my closet somehow.

THIS IS IT, though.
THIS IS EVERYTHING I WANT TO BE.
The dress has such a bizarre silhouette, at first glance you might think it's too big for her and that its a little bit frumpy but it actually fits her perfectly. The drape in the skirt is beautiful and the curved seam at the waist creates an hourglass figure. It's definitely got a Marni vibe going on. And then you take that and layer it over a two-tone button down shirt. Because that's the obvious thing to do, of course.
Brown and blue is also one of my favorite combinations.

I've been living in a batwing sweater by Kai-Aakmann, and I welcome any and all new propositions on the sweater and how to wear it. This one gives the whole look a bit of sensuality, despite the fact that she's wearing a shirt buttoned all the way up and tucked into trousers. And speaking of trousers, these have got to be one of the best I've seen. These are the pants that when you are rich, you buy them in all colors because you'll obviously live in them forever.

Not content with keeping the school-boy references intact, Jack and Lazaro brought in some unexpected textures, like a fur bomber jacket with knit ribbing. The pleated tweed skirt needs to be in my closet right now.

Leather and tweed are ALWAYS good together. This look feels a little futuristic, though I can't quite pinpoint where I'm getting the feeling from. I love dresses that look like they might be separates, this one would look great with a thin long sleeve shirt under it and some super chunky tights.

More texture! I want to say it's some kind of space-dyed jacquard, but that seems crazy? In any case, I LOVE IT, especially when paired with a printed shirt. The piece-de-resistance here is definitely the jacket, with its slight masculine/oversized look. The leather insets are great, but what I love even more is the extra long length of the sleeves.

I guess by now the boys know I love their blue leather pieces, so they made these shorts for me! So sweet those two. But yes, perfect blue, perfect shape, perfect, perfect, perfect.

I feel like I say this anytime I review their collections but HOTDAMN Proenza Schouler, I want to live in your clothes!
